Dining at The Otter feels like stepping into the home of a close friend—if that friend happened to be a renowned chef just back from the fish market.
The restaurant’s design effortlessly merges the timeless charm of the 1960s French Riviera with Italian Mediterranean modernism, drawing inspiration from Salvatore Fiume’s collaborations with Giò Ponti on iconic ocean liner projects. This rich tapestry of influences is further elevated by New York’s storied artistic heritage, where murals—such as those at Rockefeller Center, Maxfield Parrish’s works, the Chrysler Building, and the famed Bemelmans Bar—serve as defining elements of The Otter’s unique aesthetic.
Upon entering, the first impression is one of understated elegance. The entrance, adorned in deep, dark blue hues with textured wood paneling, sets the tone for the sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere within. Inside, custom-designed pieces evoke the golden era, each carefully chosen to inspire a sense of nostalgia and timeless style. The open bar counter, crafted from luxurious green marble, stands as a striking focal point, inviting guests to gather and immerse themselves in the ambiance.
In the dining area, a stunning mural takes center stage, with the color palette becoming more intricate and layered. The ceiling, finished with a glossy white lacquer, subtly reflects light across the room, while terracotta-colored cushions add warmth and contrast. At the heart of the space is a captivating mural by the immensely talented architect-turned-artist, Elvira Solana. Drawing inspiration from Fiume’s Mediterranean palette, Solana’s work presents a panoramic, almost metaphysical depiction of New York—capturing the city’s diverse landscapes, from the tranquil forests of Bear Mountain to the bustling streets of Manhattan and the serene beaches of the Hamptons. This artwork fosters an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and forward-looking.
The furniture, with its natural textures and masterful craftsmanship, pays homage to the iconic designs of Gabriella Crespi. Woven vimini chairs, with their elegant curves, evoke a sense of cinematic history—as if they once supported the likes of Marcello Mastroianni during a break from filming with Antonioni. The tables, featuring exquisite marquetry tops and refined brass legs, contribute to the overall sense of understated sophistication. Every piece within the space plays a role in shaping The Otter’s layered narrative.
